Snowshoeing in New Hampshire is a great activity for couples or families! The best part about snowshoeing in New Hampshire is that it is not only cost effective, but snowshoeing is easy to learn and you can essentially go anywhere that you normally hike in the summer! You can just putter around in a field, on a golf course, or snowshoe on trails through the woods. Try a shorter hike to get use to the snowshoes and how they feel on the snow. Once you have your "groove on", go for a little longer jaunts. Just do not get lost!
Snowshoeing has been described a walking with big feet. There are techniques which are effective for climbing hills, breaking trails, and going downhill. Also, many people suggest poles to assist you with your balance. The Mount Washington Valley Ski Touring and Snowshoeing Foundation has great tips for picking out your snowshoe equipment, but you can also just stop at any LL Bean location and they will be happy to help you make decisions on snowshoes.
As with any sport there are always a few dos and don'ts. With regards to snowshoeing they say never to step on your own snowshoe because the results will sort of make you horizontal with the snow! Go forward not backwards as you will dig your snowshoe into the snow and of course, become horizontal again! Lastly, never go straight up or down a hill and always cut across at angles. We do not want your snowshoes to become skiis!
Dress warm and have fun!

Are you considering a family getaway to enjoy Halloween in the North Conway area? If not, then you should! Sweet Street is just what you need. Remember the days when you would enjoy Halloween and Trick or Treat for hours going all over the neighbor? Well, now your children can enjoy it as well. Sweet Street is a safe, old fashioned Trick or Treat block party for children 10 and under. Sweet Street allows children to stroll down spooky pumpkin lined streets in Jackson Village and collect goodies from displays set up by local businesses and families. This sounds like fun to me!
In addition to enjoying Trick or Treat, children will be able to enter the Spooky Carved Pumpkin contest, join the Spooktacular Costume Parade, or just enjoy the warmth of the harvest bonfire. Of course there will be cider and some old fashion country music to enjoy as well.
Sweet Street will be held in Jackson Village on Saturday, October 31st. If you do plan to enter the Pumpkin Contest, registration starts at 2 P.M. The major Trick or Treat event starts at 4:30 and if you have any questions, just call the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce at 383-9356.
Happy Halloween from the Innkeepers at the Old Field House Inn!

Fall foliage is just around the corner and New Hampshire is the perfect place to visit to enjoy the views and outstanding scenery! Guests of the Old Field House Inn can turn at any corner and enjoy special rides through the countryside and mountains and enjoy nature's splendor as it shows its best colors and scenery of the season. Vivid reds, vibrant yellows, and brilliant orange are a few of the colors that will be on display. Of course, there are also the pumpkins galore, apple orchards and hay rides to get you into the full spirit!
We have many favorite Fall foliage rides but two favorites are the Kancamagus Highway and Pinkham Notch Loop. The Kancamagus Highway is one of New England's more beautiful drives. It covers 34 miles and is known by locals as "the Kank". The east-west drives goes through over 800,000 acres of the White Mountain National Forest and the views are breathtaking. The Pinkham Notch Loop offers spectacular views of the Presidential Mountains and surrounding countryside, including Mount Washington.
Fall foliage is almost upon us! We encourage you to make reservations early and leave the rest to nature!

It does not have to be Christmas to visit Santa’s Village in
Jefferson, New Hampshire! Many guests of
the family friendly Old Field House Inn visit Santa’s Village throughout its
season of May through Christmas. Santa
is usually found sitting in his big green chair at his home, just waiting to
welcome the children! His reindeer are
right nearby at their barn waiting to be petted and hoping for some special
cookies. So this should be the first
thing to add to your list while visiting Santa’s Village.
Rides and entertainment are in abundance and some of the all
time favorites include Santa’s Express Train, Merry Christmas Ferris Wheel, and
the Little Drummer Boy. Even during the
Christmas Season 12 rides stay open and are operated, weather permitting! Now if you have not had enough fun yet, make
sure to see a theater. The Spirit of
Christmas, Jingle Bell Rock, Reading Reindeer, Toy Time Fun, and The Polar
Theater will all be well enjoyed.
Admission is $24.00 and they can be purchased on-line. Children 3 and younger are admitted for
free! Of course, they do have season
passes and multiple day tickets. Have

Kancamagus Highway is one of the most scenic rides in the North Conway, New Hampshire area. Stretching 34 ½ miles from Conway to Lincoln, New Hampshire this is a scenic ride to be enjoyed by everyone. The national Scenic Byway climbs to nearly 3,000 feet and is the highest elevation of any paved road in the northeast. The Kancamagus Highway follows the Swift River, which has a number of areas to hike, swim, see beautiful waterfalls, and enjoy scenic vistas. If it is a hot day, stop along the way and enjoy a refreshing dip in the river and natural swimming holes. Just look for cars and you know you have arrived!
Along the way, make sure to stop at Lost River Gorge. The distinctive formations reveal the history of this region as the Lost River weaves though granite, crevasses, and caverns. Franconia Notch State Park is also a noted area not to be missed! Flume Gorge is 800 feet long and 90 feet tall. There is a two-mile trail which crosses bridges, passes waterfalls, views scenic pools and glacial boulders. There is now a little erosion and he is a little under the weather, but make sure to visit the Old Man of the Mountain.
This is just a sampling of what is to be enjoyed along the Kancamagus Highway. On your next visit to the Old Field House Inn, make sure to enjoy this ride during your visit!
